Tenacity Guts and Grace Frida

I have admired the paintings of Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo for many years, especially the images of her face.  During her life she was a visual spectacle, with her beautiful, colorful traditional Mexican dresses and flowers in her hair. But, I think what most inspires me is that she expressed herself in her art in spite of intense physical  and emotional pain suffered as a result of a bus accident that happened when she was eighteen and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, world famous muralist, Diego Rivera.

In my quilted version of Frida, I am giving her a smile by sewing and painting turned up lines on her lips and an affirmation by writing “Tenacity Guts and Grace” as well as other healing words on the surface of my quilt.  I use the art form of the quilt itself to affirm the specific importance of traditional women’s work and to make a statement about women’s worth and my own worth.

This art quilt is machine pieced, machine appliquéd, machine quilted, painted with acrylic paint and embellished with glass beads and polymer clay.
